Barcelona’s thrilling 3-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final ultimately proved insufficient, as the Blaugrana bowed out 4-3 on aggregate.
However, the defeat did not stop Atletico captain Koke from delivering a glowing tribute to Barcelona’s young maestro, Pedri.
Despite the heartbreak at the Spotify Camp Nou, the 21-year-old midfielder left a lasting impression on his rivals.
Koke did not hold back his praise for the Spanish international, labeling him one of the finest players on the planet.
“Barca is a fantastic team,” Koke told reporters after the match.
“The young lads are flying. Pedri, if he’s not the best in the world, is certainly one of the best.”
The Atletico captain emphasized the difficulty of playing against him, adding,
“Pedri is a machine. We’re so lucky he’s Spanish. He’s the present and future of Spain. He’ll bring a lot of joy to Barca and the national team.”
Hansi Flick’s youthful side ignited hope early on. Academy graduate Marc Bernal opened the scoring in the 29th minute, finishing expertly from Lamine Yamal’s precise cross.
The comeback gained further momentum just before half-time when a foul on Pedri allowed Raphinha to convert from the penalty spot.
Bernal struck again in the 72nd minute from Joao Cancelo’s delivery, raising the prospect of a miraculous turnaround. However, despite their dominance and 21 shots on goal, a fourth goal eluded them.
For Diego Simeone, the night was an exercise in resilience. With the first-leg advantage dwindling, his side weathered relentless waves of pressure.
“We knew we were going to suffer,” Simeone admitted. “They score the second and you have to resist. The team did what it had to do.”
The result ends Barcelona’s reign as Copa del Rey holders, a competition they have won 32 times. While the exit stings, the performance offers encouragement.
Atletico Madrid now advances to the final, seeking their first major silverware in over four years.
