Oriol Romeu

The FC Barcelona team saw a number of changes during the most recent summer transfer window, chief among them being the departure of Inigo Martinez and the addition of Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford. But the one involving midfielder Oriol Romeu was undoubtedly the oddest of these adjustments.

After negotiating a contract termination agreement, the Spanish midfielder reportedly departed Barcelona on August 28. However, the exit was extremely quiet because the club did not issue an official statement thanking him for his efforts. This information was reported by Diario AS.

Romeu had a few days to find a new club after his contract was terminated, but he was unable to do so before the major European leagues’ transfer window closed on September 1.

He had a number of offers over the summer, including one from Girona, but the Catalan team was cautious due to his knee issues, which had previously prevented him from playing at his peak the previous season.

Barcelona and Oriol Romeu reach agreement on contract termination

Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona and Oriol Romeu are nearing a contract termination for the seasoned midfield player following days of discussions.

Since the beginning of preseason, Romeu has been training alone while he waits for a decision regarding his future. However, it took several days for the two parties to settle their differences and come to an agreement that works for everyone, and an official announcement is anticipated as early as Thursday.

In order for Barça to finish registering Gerard Martín and Roony Bardghji, Oriol’s dismissal is essential. Iñaki Peña’s loan to Elche, which was officially announced on Wednesday, will soon allow Wojciech Szczesny to register, and Romeu’s exit will aid with the last details.

Romeu, a product of La Masia, rejoined Barça in the summer of 2023 and played 37 games during the 2023–24 campaign but was unable to make an impression. When he becomes a free agent, he is anticipated to rejoin Girona, where he was loaned last year.
