Barcelona have announced the sacking of Ernesto Valverde!
The decision comes after a shocking defeat to Atletico Madrid faced by Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Super Copa.
Valverde had been on thin rope for a long time. In his two full seasons, he won both La Liga titles but both were more due to the collapse of the Madrid sides rather than the talent of the Barcelona team.
In Europe, whenever faced with a challenge, Barcelona collapsed at Rome and Liverpool.
With the presidential elections upcoming, Barcelona’s current president Josep Bartomeu was under pressure to deliver. He has now taken the final step and terminated the contract of the Barcelona coach.
Valverde has been replaced by Quique Setien. The 61 year old was the manager of Real Betis until recently and has formerly managed Racing Santander, Poli and Las Palmas among other famous clubs.
He is also a fan of the Barcelona legend Johann Cryuff.
There are signs of hope in the club and amongst the fans also there is relief and respite. However, Setien remains untested at a big club and how much he can inspire a Barcelona side of such huge egos remains to be seen.
