Barcelona are stepping up their pursuit of Athletic Club’s exciting 22‑year‑old winger Nico Williams. Talks between Williams’s camp and Barca sporting director Deco have progressed in recent days—Deco even flew to Ibiza to push the negotiations forward.
Ter Stegen, Araujo on Barcelona’s Departure List as Club Eyes Nico Williams
While financial and sporting terms are reportedly agreed, registering the player is proving challenging: La Liga’s strict wage cap leaves no room on Barcelona’s books.
La Liga president Javier Tebas raised a red flag, stating the club has “currently lacks the salary cap space … to register” both new signings Joan Garcia and Nico Williams.
He emphasized that “major adjustments” like sales are necessary for compliance.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the only viable route is offloading a high-wage but non-essential veteran. Two prime candidates have surfaced: goalkeeper Marc‑Andre ter Stegen and centre-back Ronald Araujo.
Ter Stegen, 33, remains under contract until 2028 and intends to fight for his spot. But with veteran Joan Garcia already signed and Wojciech Szczesny waiting as backup, his playing time—and his hefty salary—may push Barca to consider a shocking departure.
Similarly, Araujo, a fan favourite with a long-term deal, commands around €15 million gross salary.
While manager Hansi Flick values his defensive strength, Barcelona view him as expendable if a hefty offer meets his €60–65 million release clause during the early July window.
Club president Joan Laporta remains hopeful that with careful departures and salary rebalancing, the club can register Williams in time for the 2025–26 season, despite the financial tightrope.
