Barcelona confirm approach for Garcia

Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Barcelona are interested in Eric Garcia.

The Barcelona coach took over the club a few weeks back after a tumultuous breakdown at the club. He has managed to drill together a decent team but is still lacking a good defender at the back to partner the ageing Gerard Pique.

One man who has been on Barcelona’s radar is Eric Garcia. The Manchester City youth product broke into the first team last season under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola.

However, with City having first options in new boy Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones; Garcia knows he will not be getting much game time.

This has triggered Barcelona to make a bid for the young Spanish centre back.

With only a few hours to go before the window shuts, Koeman has admitted to a transfer approach.

“It is true, we want Eric García,” Koeman said on the pregame press conference ahead of Barcelona’s match against Sevilla. “I have read Pep’s comments and that is how it is.”

Guardiola admitted in August that García wants a different challenge. “He is under contract for one more year, he doesn’t want to renew his contract,” Guardiola said. “We wanted to but he didn’t. We believe that he wants to play somewhere else.”

It now remains to be seen what turns up.
