Barcelona could still bring Messi back since PSG haven't reached any verbal agreement yet

Since Argentina’s victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, there have been conflicting speculations about Messi’s future

Some have said that he would return to Barcelona, while others have confirmed that he will extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. The story of the renewal with PSG has been particularly compelling thus far this year. However, a recent report from Ben Jacobs (h/t GOAL) indicates that Messi’s return to Barcelona may still be on the table, as the Argentine and PSG were unable to come to an oral agreement over a contract extension.

Just one day after Xavi’s press conference, during which the Barcelona manager was questioned about Messi’s prospective return, comes this news. During the press conference, Xavi brought up the possibility of Messi’s comeback, saying that if the Argentine even wants to return to Camp Nou, the door will always be open.

But Messi, who recently guided Argentina to World Cup victory, is eager to stay at the top of football for the time being. And even if there have been ongoing rumours of a return to Barcelona, a new contract with PSG still seems to be the most likely outcome. Even Spanish journalists like Alfredo Martinez have asserted that Messi’s desire to stay at PSG and the club’s present financial circumstances make a move back to Catalonia “difficult.”

This happened even as Barcelona was apparently considering using another lever in 2023 to try to recruit the 35-year-old immediately after Messi’s World Cup victory. But considering the stiffer regulations set forth by La Liga and the club’s exorbitant compensation budget, that seems like an unlikely scenario.

In the end, PSG still holds the advantage in their pursuit of Messi’s contract extension. They have the money to burn and the sporting perspective to keep the veteran striker satisfied, despite the fact that they haven’t verbally agreed to a new contract with him yet. Les Parisiens must, however, compete effectively in every match if they are to match Messi’s desire. The Argentine international’s future this coming summer may be greatly influenced by their performance, particularly in the Champions League.
