Barcelona eye Inter Milan’s robust right-back Denzel Dumfries as they explore smart, value-driven defensive reinforcements ahead of the new season.

Barca Set Sights on Dumfries: The €25M Right-Back Race Begins

Following the capture of Spanish goalkeeper Joan Garcia and the pursuit of winger Nico Williams via his €58 million release clause, Catalan giants now have their sights on strengthening defensively.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Dumfries aged 29 and a standout performer in Inter’s run to the Champions League semi-finals is attractively priced with a €25 million release clause, but that bid must land before mid-July.

Romano confirmed Barcelona’s interest but noted that no formal offer has yet been made.

Still, the Colombian-born Dutchman left a powerful impression during Inter’s 7–6 aggregate victory over Barca, showcasing pace, physicality, and attacking flair that impressed coach Hansi Flick.

Dumfries embodies the type of “railing” wing-back—energetic, tenacious, and forward-thinking—that could offer a different dimension from current options.

While Jules Kounde remains the preferred right-back, there are concerns about depth behind him. Hector Fort and Eric García have filled in, but neither offers the same dynamism.

With Barcelona aiming to comply with La Liga’s 1:1 wage-to-transfer balance rule, Dumfries’ manageable clause and clear tactical fit align with their strategic constraints.

His contract at Inter runs until 2028, and his €5.1 million gross salary seems feasible within Barca’s wage structure.

Still, the club must weigh priorities. Nico Williams takes centre stage now, and any further move particularly for Dumfries will depend on financial stretch, squad exits, and registration windows.

If Barcelona do push ahead, they face a tight deadline. Madrid and United may also circle, making this a delicate race.

Yet, at €25 million, the move represents a smart, low-risk solution that could provide immediate competition and tactical flexibility just what Flick needs to sharpen his squad’s edge.
