Barcelona face competition from Arsenal in pursuit of Spanish midfielder

If Merino picks Arsenal over Barcelona, then he will make a return to the Premier League.

Barcelona are in search of a prominent midfielder and they are keen to get the signature of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino. Now, the La Liga giants face a tough task with Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta is keen to find a new midfielder for the upcoming season. They have focused on the Spanish star and his contract with Sociedad is set to expire in 2025.

As per the reporting of Mundo Deportivo, the Gunners are said to be interested in Merino’s skillset. On the other side, Barcelona want to sign him and new manager Hansi Flick is also tracking developments.

Real Sociedad have put an asking price of around €25m. This amount is pretty affordable for Arsenal. However, Barcelona may struggle to find the necessary cash.

If Merino picks Arsenal over Barcelona, then he will make return to the Premier League. He has previously played for Newcastle when he made the move to the Magpies in the summer of 2018.

Merino was asked about his views on the Premier League and his time at Newcastle. He said, “What marked me the most in Newcastle was the stadium, the fans. I think it was a unique life, feeling what St James’ Park is, I will always have it in my heart and mind because it is something unique.

“If there is one thing I am happy about throughout this journey, it is that the steps I have taken in my career have been perfect and at the right time to continue growing as a footballer who has undergone a growth process. And I don’t want it to end.”
