Barcelona are looking to tie down Lionel Messi beyond the summer of 2021.
It is believed that the Argentine’s best years are still in front of him as he is about to turn 33 in a week’s time.
He continues to prove that he is the best player in the world by leading Barcelona’s scoring and assist charts at 26 and 18 in 33 games this season. There is little to no evidence that Messi is slowing down and Barca wants to capitalize on that.
Offering him an extension is in their best interest. The Blaugrana are also cautious over wasting Messi’s prime years. That is why they are open to recruiting older players to surround him with, in order to win more silverware right now.
Messi only has a year left in his deal which means he will be open to negotiate with other clubs next January. Of course, the idea is to sign him to an extension before that. The general idea is Messi will see out his career at Camp Nou itself but nothing can be said for certain.
The 6-time Balon d’Or winner’s outburst in the recent past has led to heightened speculation regarding his future. He has spoken up against the Barcelona hierarchy multiple times which leads us to believe that everything isn’t rainbows and sunshine behind closed doors. Messi could pack up his bags in his final years and head to a different league just like Cristiano Ronaldo did with Juventus.
