As of right now, entering into the summer transfer window, Barcelona’s top priority is to recruit a new striker. Their first objective has been Julian Alvarez, but they have shifted their focus to Joao Pedro because it is anticipated that a move for the Atletico Madrid player would not be possible.

When it became apparent to people in Can Barça that Alvarez was becoming unattainable in April, Barcelona’s interest in Pedro was first made public. Sporting director Deco recently travelled to London to meet with the Chelsea forward’s representation, and the Catalans have positive reports about him.

Barcelona’s issue is that a deal for Pedro may be just as difficult as one for Alvarez. Chelsea is willing to demand up to €100 million to approve the deal, but Xabi Alonso, the new manager of the Premier League team, may completely veto it.

Chelsea announced over the weekend that Alonso will take over as manager starting in the summer, and the Sport reports that he will have the last word on whether Pedro may depart.

Barcelona are running out of striker targets

Barcelona are concerned about his position because they think the former Real Madrid head coach would obstruct any possibility of a deal. The conversations produced two distinct takeaways. The 24-year-old Brazilian is eager to join Barcelona for the next campaign.

But at this point, it is said to be nearly impossible to make that happen. With a current market worth of €75 million, Chelsea is hesitant to trade a player they purchased from Brighton for €65 million just a year ago.

Chelsea’s circumstances may potentially change based on Xabi Alonso’s intentions. The deal becomes much more difficult to pursue if Pedro is seen by the new Chelsea manager as crucial to his vision. On the other side, Barcelona may have an opportunity if Alonso is hesitant to retain a disgruntled player.

Pedro is the ideal candidate for Deco and Flick. He is a striker with no conceit, strong in the air, at ease with both feet, adaptable across the front line, and able to sustain a high level of defensive energy.
