Barcelona are actively targeting Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate and have already held initial talks about a potential move, sources confirm.
Barcelona Hold Talks Over Shock Move for Liverpool Defender Konate
The Catalan giants face a pressing need to reinforce their central defence next summer following the departure of Inigo Martinez to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr.
With only four senior centre-backs currently available and financial restrictions preventing an immediate signing, the club is focusing its efforts on the free agent market for 2025.
Konate has emerged as a prime target. The powerful French defender enters the final year of his Liverpool contract this summer and reports indicate he has shown no inclination to sign a renewal. This situation means he could leave Anfield for free in June 2025.
Barcelona face significant competition, however. Rivals Real Madrid also hold a strong interest in Konate and are reportedly considering a move for him as a free agent next year, or potentially even accelerating plans to sign him during the current transfer window.
Despite Madrid’s interest, Barcelona are pushing forward. According to reports, club officials have conducted preliminary discussions with Konate’s representatives.
Crucially, it is understood the 25-year-old would welcome a switch to Camp Nou, where he would compete for a starting role alongside Ronald Araujo and Pau Cubarsi.
Securing Konate on a free transfer would represent a major coup for Barcelona. Acquiring a defender of his quality and experience without a transfer fee aligns perfectly with the club’s need to navigate its challenging financial landscape.
While beating Real Madrid to his signature presents a significant hurdle, Barcelona have signalled their intent by opening talks early.
