Bruno Guimaraes, a quality defensive midfielder for Newcastle United, has caught Barcelona’s attention as they search for a replacement for departed club captain Sergio Busquets

Goal Brazil claims that Barcelona and Liverpool have gotten in touch with Guimaraes to learn more about him and his status at Newcastle United because they are both interested in signing him this summer.

In a €40 million agreement, Guimaraes transferred from Olympique Lyon to Newcastle in January 2022. He has now developed into a St. James’ Park fan favourite and contributed significantly to the Magpies’ top-four Premier League finish this season.

The midfielder played 40 games in all competitions, contributing to five goals with his own goals and assists. He has caught the attention of prestigious clubs like Barcelona, Liverpool, and Real Madrid thanks to his performances. Currently, it is thought that Barça and Liverpool have made contact with the Brazilian international to learn more about his current whereabouts in Tyneside as the first steps in their pursuit of him.

As a reward for his services since joining, Newcastle wants to give Guimaraes a new and improved deal. His current contract is valid through 2026. The midfielder’s agents have cautioned the Magpies about Liverpool and Barcelona’s rising interest. Newcastle is sure that despite his desire to leave, he will prefer a contract extension and staying put with the team. If so, Barcelona’s ability to sign Guimaraes would be all but impossible.

Right now, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is manager Xavi Hernandez’s first choice to take over for Busquets. His €60 million release clause, though, is seen to be a barrier. Players like Ruben Neves, Sofyan Amrabat, and most lately Manuel Ugarte are also being linked in addition to Zubimendi. The Brazilian international Guimaraes appears to be attracting some interest, although a transfer this summer looks improbable.
