Barcelona have come in contact with Sergi Roberto over his contract extension

It is already widely accepted that Barcelona will start searching for a new right-back in January or the summer.

An improvement in the position is desired because Hector Bellerin isn’t clicking and his contract expires at the end of the season. Sergi Roberto’s contract will also expire at the end of the current campaign, which may necessitate the club signing two reinforcements for the right-back position.

That might not be an option, though, considering Spotify Camp Nou’s current financial situation. Reports are now saying that Barcelona is thinking about giving Roberto a one-year extension to stay with the team past the current season.

The 30-year-contract old’s with the Blaugrana was extended this past summer, and the club gave him the contract at manager Xavi Hernandez’s request. And before dislocating his shoulder in late October, Roberto returned the manager’s faith with a few strong performances. The Spaniard has scored twice in 12 appearances across all leagues.

Xavi admires Roberto for his adaptability and approach. And for those reasons as well as Barça’s financial predicament, he might be granted a further one-year extension. At a later point in the season, Barcelona will assess the overall issue and make a decision regarding their right-back situation.
