According to La Liga president Javier Tebas, Barcelona will soon have the money to buy Athletic Club winger Nico Williams. Williams, 22, has a release clause in his contract at €58 million ($63.2 million), and Barça president Joan Laporta stated last week that the Catalan team could afford to sign the international player from Spain.

Tebas stated that Barça’s financial status is getting better, but the team is still over the La Liga annual spending cap, which keeps them from acquiring new players. It’s reasonable to believe that Barcelona can still acquire a player like Nico Williams given their efforts to cut their payroll by more than €200 million ($218 million) and other internal club initiatives unrelated to asset sales or other financial levers.

Barcelona planning to use ‘Lewandowski Formula’ to sign Nico Williams

Mundo Deportivo claims the Blaugrana will employ a similar strategy to the one they used to sign Robert Lewandowski two years prior. Nico will be given a five-year contract, with the first two seasons’ base pay being lower than the third years, and a significant pay increase beginning in the third year.

Lewandowski’s contract is expected to increase in the summer, so the team may be willing to let him go in order to avoid having to cover his exorbitant salary. The pay increase in Year 3 makes more sense because Williams is younger and is anticipated to play a longer role.

Barça will also be expected to be in much better shape after moving back to Camp Nou, paying off their enormous debt, and receiving more sponsorship money from companies like Nike.
