Barcelona have received a surprise opportunity to bolster their midfield ranks this week without spending a single euro on a transfer fee.
Free Agent Leon Goretzka Offers Himself to Barcelona
The Camp Nou hierarchy received contact from the representatives of former Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka, who officially became a free agent following the expiration of his contract with the German champions.
The 31-year-old German international remains without a club for the 2026/27 campaign, prompting his entourage to approach the Spanish champions directly.
According to market expert Matteo Moretto of Marca, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, Goretzka’s camp has offered the midfielder’s services to Barcelona.
The player sees a clear opportunity to reunite with his former Bayern Munich coach, Hansi Flick, under whom he enjoyed considerable success.
Goretzka worked with Flick at the Allianz Arena between 2019 and 2021, making 64 appearances and contributing 15 goals and 18 assists during that trophy-laden period.
The German midfielder hopes that special relationship could prove decisive in securing his next destination.
The timing of Goretzka’s approach appears calculated.
Barcelona recently suffered a significant setback with Frenkie de Jong sustaining a long-term knee injury a rupture of the medial collateral ligament that is expected to sideline the Dutchman for approximately four months.
With Flick reportedly requesting midfield reinforcements, Goretzka views himself as an ideal solution.
Despite the appeal of a free transfer and the player’s existing chemistry with Flick, Barcelona’s sporting department, led by Deco, do not currently intend to pursue the experienced midfielder.
The club’s management believes the squad already possesses sufficient depth to cope with De Jong’s absence and has no plans to strengthen the midfield position.
Barcelona’s stance also affects young midfielder Marc Casado’s situation.
The club maintains that the academy graduate has reached a stage where he should seek regular first-team football elsewhere, though they will not force his departure.
Goretzka enjoyed a productive final season at Bayern, featuring in 48 matches and accumulating over 2,300 minutes of playing time.
Although not an undisputed starter, he played a key role in Bayern’s domestic clean sweep and their run to the Champions League semi-finals.
For now, however, the German international must continue his search for a new home as Barcelona remain focused on their existing midfield options.
