Barcelona president Joan Laporta explains why Gundogan wanted to go

The Blaugrana are now unsure about Kounde’s long-term prospects, and Chelsea is reportedly one team watching the defender. Barcelona beat the Blues in the summer of 2022 for Kounde’s services, despite the Blues’ long-standing desire in him dating back to his time at Sevilla.

Now, as Enzo Maresca’s team continues their massive rebuild, they are apparently eager to give Barca a taste of their own medicine this summer by stealing their prized defender. However, after signing a number of contract extensions at the beginning of 2025, Spanish reports indicate Barcelona is now trying to prevent Chelsea’s approaches by doing the same with Kounde.

Hansi Flick considers Kounde an important player, and he wants his future resolved as soon as possible, according to Diario Sport. Although the France international’s contract with Catalonia is now set to expire in 2027, it is intended to be extended until 2030 by providing him with a sizable pay raise.

Barcelona plan long-term contract extension for €100m Chelsea target

As Ansu Fati gets ready to go, Kounde would rise to third position on the list with a new contract, albeit he presently ranks fourth in terms of base pay at Barcelona. In addition to his rise to prominence as a right-back, Barcelona has been compelled to act by Chelsea’s transfer interest.

Because their club captain has been dealing with injuries for the past 18 months, the Blues are worried about Reece James’ future. With Barcelona still keeping a close eye on Kounde’s finances, Chelsea is reportedly willing to make an offer of about €100 million for him.

Flick, however, believes the 26-year-old is essential and will pressure the team to select other players over the former Sevilla player. The fact that Kounde has started 21 of Barcelona’s 23 league games in 2024–25 shows how important he is to the team; only Raphinha (on 22) has started more games for Flick in his first league season in Spanish football.
