Deco Reveals Why Barcelona Chose Dani Olmo Over Nico Williams
Barcelona sporting director Deco has shed light on the club’s decision to sign Dani Olmo instead of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams during the recent transfer window.
With heavy links with Williams throughout the summer, Barcelona opted for the versatile Olmo in a move that left some fans questioning the club’s priorities.
In an interview with Barca One, Deco explained that while the club was looking for a high-quality winger, they felt Olmo offered more flexibility and options.
“We needed a top-level winger, and we already have Raphinha, Ferran, and Ansu Fati, who was doing well before his injury.
We also have Lamine and players like FermÃn or Dani Olmo who can operate out wide,” he said.
Deco stressed that the decision was based on the team’s need for versatility rather than simply adding another pure winger.
“We considered several players and spoke with clubs, but signing Dani gave us more flexibility. That ultimately shaped our approach,” he added.
The decision comes amid fan speculation that Williams had been a top target for the Catalans.
Many supporters were excited about the prospect of the Athletic star joining, especially after club president Joan Laporta suggested Barcelona could afford the deal.
Despite the disappointment among some fans, Barcelona’s hierarchy seems confident in their choice.
However, rumors persist that the club may still look to bring in Williams, potentially reigniting interest in the talented winger next summer.
For now, Olmo’s ability to fill multiple roles across the attacking line appears to have won over Deco and Barcelona’s coaching staff.
