In a decisive La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona’s head coach, Hansi Flick, upheld his strict disciplinary standards by benching French defender Jules Kounde due to repeated tardiness.

Barcelona’s Kounde benched for third time

This incident marks the third time this season that Kounde has faced such consequences for arriving late to pre-match meetings.

Kounde’s previous infractions occurred during matches against Deportivo Alavas and RCD Espanyol, where similar delays led to his exclusion from the starting lineup.

In each instance, Flick has demonstrated unwavering commitment to punctuality and team discipline, opting to replace Kounde with 18-year-old Hector Fort in the right-back position.

Fort, who had a promising start under former manager Xavi Hernandez, has seen increased opportunities under Flick due to Kounde’s lapses.

Before the match, Flick addressed the situation, stating that Kounde’s absence from the starting eleven was a “technical decision.”

However, reports from Cadena SER suggest that the benching was a direct result of Kounde’s late arrival to the pre-match tactical briefing.

Flick emphasized the importance of punctuality, noting,

“Before the match, we have two or three meetings. It’s very important that the players are present. It’s not complicated to be on time. It’s about respect for teammates.”

This disciplinary approach isn’t new under Flick’s tenure. Goalkeeper Inaki Pena also faced similar repercussions earlier in the season for arriving late to a team meeting during the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Pena’s tardiness resulted in him being benched, allowing Wojciech Szczesny to step in and subsequently secure the starting goalkeeper position.

Flick’s firm stance on discipline underscores his commitment to fostering a culture of professionalism and respect within the team.

By holding all players accountable, regardless of their status, he aims to instill a sense of responsibility and unity, essential components for the club’s success.

As Barcelona continues its campaign, the emphasis on internal discipline serves as a reminder that individual actions can impact team dynamics.

Flick’s approach highlights the importance of maintaining high standards both on and off the pitch, ensuring that all players contribute positively to the team’s objectives.
