Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski made a monumental financial sacrifice last summer, choosing sporting glory over immense wealth by rejecting a jaw-dropping offer from Saudi Arabia.
Lewandowski Turned Down €100m Saudi Deal for Barcelona Glory
According to his agent, Pini Zahavi, the Polish superstar received a proposal worth an astonishing €100 million per season from the Saudi Pro League. Zahavi revealed the details in an interview with Polish newspaper ‘Fakt’, later relayed by Spanish publication Diario Sport.
Despite the life-changing sum on the table, Lewandowski firmly turned it down. His motivation was crystal clear: he prioritized competing for major trophies with Barcelona over the financial windfall.
“I can explain that a year ago he received a proposal from Saudi Arabia offering him 100 million euros per season. Seasonally! And he didn’t want to go,” Zahavi stated.
“He wanted to fight for important titles. He wanted to fight for La Liga and the Champions League with Barça.”
Lewandowski’s decision proved justified on the pitch. Even at 35 years old, he delivered a phenomenal campaign for the Blaugrana.
The prolific frontman smashed in 42 goals across all competitions last season. His goals were absolutely pivotal in powering Barcelona to a domestic league and cup double – effectively a domestic treble including the Spanish Super Cup.
Zahavi highlighted the success that followed Lewandowski’s commitment: “…and he almost won all these titles,” referencing the near-clean sweep domestically, though the Champions League ultimately eluded them.
This revelation underscores Lewandowski’s fierce competitive drive and commitment to Barcelona’s project.
Choosing the challenge of La Liga and European football over a guaranteed €100 million per year demonstrates his focus on achieving footballing legacy at the highest level, a decision Barcelona fans will undoubtedly celebrate.
