According to multiple reports, including Mundo Deportivo, the proposed deal maintains De Jong’s current gross salary of €18-19 million but eliminates deferred payments from his COVID-era contract.

Instead, it introduces performance-based bonuses tied to appearances, trophies, and milestones. A reduced release clause of around €80 million is also under discussion.

The 28-year-old Dutch star, whose current deal expires in 2026, has publicly confirmed his desire to stay: “I think I’ll sign a new contract with Barca… What matters is that both sides want it”.

Club president Joan Laporta has likewise stated negotiations are “on the right track”.

However, a significant hurdle remains: De Jong has yet to resolve a legal dispute with longtime agent Ali Dursun.

Barcelona cannot advance talks until he formally appoints new representation. The club is awaiting clarity on this before finalizing terms.

Sporting director Hansi Flick views De Jong as a cornerstone of his project, especially following the midfielder’s dominant second half of the 2024/25 season.

His partnership with Pedri solidified Barcelona’s midfield, shifting fan opinion after earlier criticism.

The renewal also serves a financial purpose: restructuring his deal would generate salary cap flexibility, aiding Barcelona’s compliance with La Liga’s financial rules and facilitating new signings.

Should De Jong activate the optional extension until 2029, he would complete a decade at Camp Nou, cementing his legacy at the club.

Both sides remain optimistic the deal will conclude once his representation issue is settled.
