Valverde reveals what happened to Barcelona on that Anfield night

Ever since that infamous Anfield night for Barcelona, things have not been the same at Nou Camp.

Barcelona never quite recovered from the result mentally and have been a shadow of themselves. The club faded away into nothingness towards the end of last year in terms of their playing philosophy and it was ll too messy until Messi would rescue them match after match.

Their recently sacked coach Ernesto Valverde has now revealed what happened in that one dreadful Anfield night.

“In Liverpool, they scored a goal we wanted to avoid once we started the match,” Valverde told the Star.

“One goal would have advanced us. They then scored two goals in a minute.”

“These things happen,” he added. “You always go on the side of the winner.

“In the away match against Liverpool, we suffered a lot but were able to win [at home] by three goals.

“Champions League is very complicated to win, Europa League, World Cup, Euro Cup…they are all tournaments that depend on one match or one situation.”

From 3-0 up to losing 4-0 for a club like Barcelona really does take it out of their winds. For Liverpool it has only been up and up since then.

Barcelona has refused to surrender to claims of them hiring a social media company to bring the likes of Messi, Pep Guardiola and Xavi, among others, down.

According to reports, the Catalan club hired the PR company I3 Ventures to deal with different social media accounts of people like Messi, Xavi, Carles Puyol and so on.

However, they denied any such hiring of a company and the Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu put out a statement stating the denial.

This is the statement released by the club. All statements belong to the official FC Barcelona club:

‘1. strongly denies any relationship and, even more so, the contracting of services linked to social network accounts that have spread negative or disparaging messages in relation to any person, entity or organisation that has or has had a relationship with the Club.

2. I3 Ventures, contracted by the Club, has no link to these accounts and, if any type of relationship is shown to exist, the Club would immediately terminate its contractual relationship and take appropriate legal action in defense of its legitimate interests.

3. FC Barcelona confirms that it has contracted social network monitoring services in order to be aware of both positive and negative messages.

4. The hiring of these services is to ensure the protection and preservation of the club’s reputation, as well as those linked to the Club.

5. The Club requires the immediate rectification of the information disseminated and reserves the right to take appropriate legal action against those who continue to involve the Club in this type of practice.’

Barcelona To Activate €18m Release Clause For Martin Braithwaite

Barcelona To Activate €18m Release Clause For Martin Braithwaite

Barcelona are reportedly ready to pay Martin Braithwaite’s release clause to make an emergency signing.

Sport claims that the forward would cost Barca €18m as talks are underway over a permanent deal.

If Braithwaite were to make the Camp Nou switch, it will be a bolt out of the blue. The 28-year-old was playing in the Championship two years back before transfering out to Leganes.

Javier Aguirre’s side lost Youssef En-Nesyri last month and is about to lose Braithwaite as well. Barca, who lost Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez to injuries this year, has been allowed to make a mid-season signing. They have been allotted 15 days to bring in someone to cover the final third spot.

Currently, Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Ansu Fati are the only three fit attackers in the side. With Barcelona faltering constantly, it will be really difficult for them to win any silverware without any sort of backup.

Braithwaite is quite accomplished on the international front, winning 39 caps for Denmark so far. He has scored 6 goals in 24 La Liga appearances for Leganes this season. He is capable of playing as a winger and a second striker, giving Quique Setien some options to work with.

Barca now have the permission to sing a new striker.

It remains to be seen how they end up choosing.

Spain’s footballing authorities have given Barcelona the green light to make an emergency signing after confirming forward Ousmane Dembele will miss at least the next six months with a hamstring issue. The France international, who joins fellow striker Luis Suarez on the sidelines, underwent surgery in Finland last week.

Barca, who allowed youngster Carles Perez to leave for Roma in January on loan despite Suarez being ruled out for four months, now have a 15-day period in which they can sign a replacement – despite the European transfer window being closed, according to AS.

Spanish football regulations allow sides to make emergency signings if they can prove they will be left short if player is ruled out for five months or longer. La Liga’s Medical Committee on Monday confirmed this was the case for Barca.

The rules also stipulate that any new signing must either be currently registered at a club in Spain or a free agent, however they will not be permitted to play in the Champions League.

Barcelona are in the midst of an injury crisis.

And two players run the risk of suspension for the grand Real Madrid derby.

Two Barcelona stars risk missing out on the upcoming El Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu. The likes of Samuel Umtiti and Clement Lenglet could miss the upcoming clash against Real Madrid, as per Sport.

Barcelona is bracing up for the match against Real Madrid as they aim to return on top of the La Liga summit when they clash with the Los Blancos at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It is obvious that Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele would miss the encounter and other players that are likely to join the ranks is Jordi Alba after he sustained a groin injury in the clash against Getafe. Others that could miss the game are Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti they pair a just a card shy from missing out of the clash against the La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

Barcelona will be up against Eibar in their next clash before the derby and a card for any of the center-backs will see the player miss out on the El Clasico. At least Gerard Pique would be safe, as of right now. The centre-back picked up 10 yellow cards in this season of the La Liga already, but served a ban recently against Real Betis.

Barcelona Have No Heart And Will Not Win Anything – Luis Suarez

Barcelona Have No Heart And Will Not Win Anything - Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez, not the current Barcelona striker but the 1960 Balon d’Or winner, absolutely blasted this current Blaugrana side.

He stated that his former club does not the right players to win anything this season.

“It has no heart, it has no aggressiveness,” he continued. “It has nothing, other than loose qualities from some great player who has them inside him,” he went on. “And I have to say it because I feel it a lot, a lot, a lot … This team won’t win anything this year. It’s a feeling I have, a lot…,” Suarez confessed.

“If it continues like this … or doesn’t change radically, or if there is nothing that can be done … You tell me. You are watching it. And it is not the only game,” he added.

These comments were passed after Barca’s narrow 2-1 victory over Getafe. Antoine Griezmann and Sergi Roberto helped the side gain all three points and move closer to their rivals, Real Madrid.

Griezmann missed a valuable chance late into the game which could have restored Barcelona’s two-goal cushion. The game was otherwise a reflection of Barca’s transitional phase under Quique Setien. They have already dropped out of the Copa del Rey and are still in the process of returning to their best self.

We’re just as much favourites as Real Madrid, says Setien

We're just as much favourites as Real Madrid, says Setien

Barcelona head coach Quique Setien dismisses Real Madrid as being the most preferred for La Liga this season.

“Many league titles have been decided on details, in final minutes, in situations that neither of the two teams are able to control,” he told a news conference.

“We’re just as much favourites as Real Madrid. They have got a three-point advantage but we’ve got a game there at the Bernabeu and when that moment comes we’ve got a lot of expectation.

“We know the importance of the game and of course we’ll go all out for it.”

Quique Setien and his style have been likened to that of Jose Bordalas, Getafe’s head coach. But Setien defended that by saying that while Getafe has had that style for a while, Barcelona just recently adopted it.

“It’s clear that we have two different styles. Barca have been playing like this for years, Getafe are playing the way they have been for years,” he said.

“The important thing is your plan and way of doing it overcomes the opposition

“We’re clear in what we’re playing for and how we play. What you have to do, you must to well and I think both of us do that.”

“The difficult thing for every club is to stay at the top. I don’t know if it’s us and Madrid or Getafe [as well], who are on a great run.” said the Barca boss.

“The difficult thing is to keep up that run. There are some difficult games coming up for them in Europe that might take something out of their power in LaLiga.

“Getafe last year stayed up there and this year they’re still up there. I don’t know if this form is going to be enough to catch us and Real Madrid but we have to consider them rivals.”

Antoine Griezmann Pledges His Chemistry With Lionel Messi Will Only Get Better

Antoine Griezmann Still Adjusting To Playing Alongside Lionel Messi

Antoine Griezmann admitted that he is still adjusting to playing alongside Lionel Messi.

The Frenchman is enjoying life at the Camp Nou after his £120m switch from Atletico Madrid last summer.

He ended his 5-match goal drought by scoring in a 2-1 win over Getafe but also missed a great opportunity teaed up by Messi, late into the game. He said, “We knew how hard Getafe would be to play against. They put a lot of pressure on and pressed high. They are third for a reason but we kept cool, tried to play the ball well from the back. It was tough but we suffered and won.

“I’ve been here six months, we still have to learn. I have to learn [Messi’s] movements and he has to learn mine. We’re enjoying the work we put in together and it’s getting better and better all the time. I’m very happy and really enjoying myself here. I missed a chance which I shouldn’t have done, it came to my weaker foot but luckily it didn’t matter.”

Barcelona closed their gap behind Real Madrid to just one point after their rivals drew 2-2 against Celta Vigo.

Puyol knows when Barcelona and Messi will part ways

Puyol knows when Barcelona and Messi will part ways

Barcelona legend Carles Puyol has rejected reports that Lionel Messi might leave the Catalan club.

Messi made his debut in a Barcelona team when Puyol was one of the senior players and helped the former Spanish defender lift multiple trophies over his playing career at Barcelona as captain.

The duo share a special relation having both come from the La Masia academy and Puyol acting like an elder brother to Messi in his early days.

However, of late, Messi has been involved in a public feud with club’s technical sporting director Eric Abidal leading to rumors that Leo might bid adieu to Barcelona.

“Why are we talking about Barcelona without him?” Puyol told Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo at the Laureus Awards in Berlin.

“He is still at the club, and we should be aiming to win as much as possible with him.”

“He is a player that is 32 now, he takes care of himself, and could play on until he is 38.”

“We knew from the beginning that he is a special player, but he continues to break records.”

It would seem Puyol would know a thing or two about the man he played with for over a decade. So Leo staying then?

Inter Milan want Barcelona to insert Griezmann in Lautaro Martinez transfer

Griezmann only joined Barca last summer.

But he may make another move when the transfer window reopens.

Inter Milan could ask Barcelona for Antoine Griezmann in any potential deal for Lautaro Martinez. Martinez is having his breakout season with the Nerazzurri, and has scored 16 goals in all competitions. Speculation has been rife that the 22-year-old would like to join the Catalan side to play alongside Lionel Messi.

The Argentine has a release clause of €111m, valid only for clubs outside of Italy, however it’s believed that Barcelona aren’t considering paying that sum due to FFP. Tuttosport claim that the La Liga outfit will offer Inter a host of players in order to drive the cost down.

Players such as Arturo Vidal, Carles Alena, Philippe Coutinho and Jean-Clair Todibo could be exchanged. However, the Turin daily suggests that Inter Milan would demand Griezmann in any potential deal. The 28-year-old only signed for Barcelona last summer, but his move hasn’t clicked as well as many felt it would. The Frenchman has only scored 12 goals from 32 appearances so far this season.

The Nerazzuri could offer Griezmann an escape route. Martinez meanwhile has shown no indication of a willingness to leave Italy. La Gazzetta dello Sport also claims that should the Argentine leave in the summer, the club would target Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
