Luis Enrique has been named the next head coach of Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year contract, the club has confirmed

The former Barcelona manager comes to the French capital with a wealth of expertise and a stellar resume. Christophe Galtier was let go by PSG today, which allowed Enrique to sign.

Since leaving the Spanish national squad following their surprising elimination from the 2022 World Cup against Morocco, he had remained jobless. His qualifications are still excellent despite this setback. He was chosen by PSG as the best choice to guide the team into a new era. After a disappointing 2022–23 season at Parc des Princes, Galtier was fired. In the second part of the season, PSG underperformed.

The club had trouble convincingly retaining their Ligue 1 championship, and they were eliminated from the Champions League early. The fact that Galtier is being accused of discrimination and bigotry did not help. Although he has refuted the accusations, his reputation is in ruins. Enrique’s main goal will be to turn PSG into a legitimate Champions League title contender.

The 53-year-old has seen success before. In his first season as Barcelona’s manager in 2014–15, he led the club to an unprecedented treble. Enrique won nine trophies when he was at Camp Nou. He took over the national squad of Spain after leaving Barcelona in 2017. The 2020 European Championship semifinals were reached under his leadership. They did not live up to expectations at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, though.

The Parisians have now hired Enrique and are hoping that his leadership will help them maintain their local hegemony and win the desired European championship. Before withdrawing from the competition, German strategist Julian Nagelsmann came very close to being hired by PSG. Zinedine Zidane was their main objective, but he declined the position as he has done on numerous times.

Barcelona has completed the signing of teenage sensation Vitor Roque.

The Blaugrana have reportedly completed the signing of Vitor Roque from Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense.

The Catalan giants have reportedly paid around €40 million for his services and will arrive in Camp Nou in 2024.

Due to Barcelona’s ongoing financial struggles, the Brazilian teenager won’t be able to join his new team this summer.

He could join the first-team squad in January or the next summer window.

Barcelona are yet to register Ilkay Gundogan who arrived from Barcelona last month.

Club forward Raphinha was recently asked about Roque and made it clear how much he rates the forward.

“With Vitor Roque, we are talking about a high-quality footballer, who is showing in Brazil why Barcelona thinks of him and also the Brazilian team,” he said.

“I hope he is my teammate at Barcelona. There’s nothing better than having a great player like him, with a very big future. I think he has a lot to give to football and that he can go a long way.”

Barcelona has generally remained silent in the ongoing summer transfer market

The club has been unable to complete any of the numerous reported player sales that they had planned, and the impact is obvious in their transfer activity. So far, the Catalans have only signed and announced one first-team player: Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City. According to Gerard Romero, the Blaugranas are poised to sign their second summer contract soon.

For a long time, there has been speculation about Inigo Martinez joining Barcelona. The Spanish center-back was one of the first players to be connected with the squad ahead of the summer transfer window, and his deal might be finalised by the weekend.

The 32-year-old defender’s contract with Athletic Club expired last night, and he is now a free agent. Nonetheless, his next destination has never been in doubt. With Martinez’s arrival in Barcelona almost certain, Xavi can rest certain that his defence is in good hands. After all, the veteran gives experience to the youthful defensive core and quality to what is already the best defence in the league.

With Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, and Andreas Christensen all expected to return for the upcoming season, the 32-year-old will not be a regular starter. The manager, on the other hand, could not have asked for a finer backup player, and it is reasonable to predict that Martinez will make his fair share of contributions as the season winds down.

Last season, the veteran made 15 appearances for his previous club in La Liga, scoring one goal and keeping four clean sheets. Furthermore, he averaged nearly 10 defensive actions each game, including 3.5 clearances.

Ferran Torres determined to continue at Barcelona beyond the summer.

The Spaniard winger made his switch to Barcelona in January 2022 from Manchester City and has bagged 14 goals and nine assists since then for the Catalan giants.

But he has struggled for form last season and has managed only seven goals in 45 appearances in all competitions.

Aston Villa are reportedly considering making a move for Torres only on a temporary basis but with a purchase option set at 25 million euros.

Barcelona has an abundance of attacking players and they are keen to sell the player this window.

However, Torres is keen to stay at Camp Nou and has another four years left to run on his contract.

“I can’t wait to continue at Barcelona. I’m really happy at Barça and my plan is to continue at the club,” he said.

“I want to show that I’m a very good player. I know I haven’t been able to prove it yet.

“Although when I arrived, I helped somewhat so that the team ended up qualifying for the Champions League. I had very good games. I am aware that in the world of football, life takes many turns, today you are in Barcelona and tomorrow….”

Samuel Umtiti’s contract will be terminated with immediate effect, according to an agreement the two parties have agreed with Barcelona

Umtiti paid over €25 million to go from Lyon to the club in 2016, but injuries marred his stay in Catalonia. Over the course of seven years, he would make just 133 appearances for the team, with his lone appearance coming in the 2021–2022 season.

Umtiti will now resume his search for a new club after returning from a successful loan stint with Lecce, as Barcelona has officially announced his departure from the team.

“FC Barcelona and defender Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement to release the player from the contract binding him to the club until the end of the 2025/26 season,” said the statement. “FC Barcelona would like to express its gratitude to Umtiti and bestow upon him good fortune and future success.”

Umtiti, a high-earning player at Camp Nou, was unexpectedly tied down to a long-term deal early last year that committed him to Barcelona until 2026. His original contract was set to end in 2023. Later, it became clear that Umtiti had consented to the extension in order to ease Barcelona’s financial difficulties, agreeing to have the first 18 months of his salary spread out over almost four years.

Following the signing of his agreement, the French defender would never actually play for the team, missing the majority of the 2021–2022 season due to a toe injury before spending last season on loan in Italy with Lecce to demonstrate his fitness. The most Umtiti has made since the 2017–18 season was 25 appearances for Lecce last season.

Barcelona close in on the signing of Ivan Fresneda of Real Valladolid

Ivan Fresneda of Real Valladolid has been under observation by Barcelona as a potential candidate to bolster the position this summer

Reports, however, had indicated that the adolescent might be moving to Borussia Dortmund, whose negotiations with his club were moving forward.

However, Dortmund’s interest in Fresneda has now subsided, according to a report from the German publication Ruhr Nachrichten, placing Barcelona in the lead to sign the Spanish prospect.

Fresneda had a strong La Liga debut season with Real Valladolid, which is why teams are interested in signing him even if his team was ultimately relegated. Although he is still a bit inexperienced at age 18, the teenager has a lot of potential, which has Barcelona taking notice. Fresneda’s contract contains a €20 million release clause, but he may be available this summer for only €15 million, which is another feature that appeals to Barcelona.

The young prospect might be ready to wait for an approach, but only for a short period of time, because the possibility of playing for the La Liga champions also appeals to him. Borussia Dortmund has since withdrawn from the contest, giving Barça the advantage in the hunt for Fresneda. The Blaugrana are currently having difficulty raising money, so before they can think about adding any more players, they must make some significant sales.

Additionally, the right-back position is not currently considered as being as important as the additions of Marcelo Brozovic and Vitor Roque. It will be interesting to see how Barcelona’s pursuit of Fresneda plays out and whether the reigning La Liga champions actually manage to sign him this summer.

Barcelona plans to sign Marcel Sabitzer from Bayern as a ‘Busquets’ replacement

Barcelona was left with the challenging challenge of replacing Sergio Busquets after the 34-year-old decided to leave the club at the end of the last campaign and recently signed for MLS team Inter Miami

The rumoured top targets for Barcelona to fill the vacancy at pivot, Martin Zubimendi and Joshua Kimmich, have not yet been attracted to the club.

Following Busquets’ departure, Barcelona reportedly received offers to recruit numerous players from numerous teams and agents, with Sport reporting that Marcel Sabitzer was one of those players.

The Austrian international is unpopular at Bayern Munich and is extremely likely to leave this summer. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Manchester United.

Barcelona doesn’t now require a guy like Sabitzer because they already acquired Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City. The article seems to claim that the 29-year-old is a pivot, but he is not, and in terms of other areas of the midfield, he is no better than the choices presently available at the club.

The search for a new pivot in Barcelona is likely to continue. Currently, Marcelo Brozovic, Dani Parejo, and Oriol Romeu are listed as their stated targets, although it is still unclear who they will actually sign this summer.

Ilkay Gundogan has signed a two-year contract with the Catalan giants.

The German midfielder becomes Barcelona’s first signing of the summer and has arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City.

Gundogan’s release clause has been fixed at €400 million and turned down the chance to renew his contract with the Cityzens.

The midfielder has signed a contract until the summer of 2025 and also contains the option for a third year.

“Today is bittersweet. Goodbyes are never easy, but it’s even harder with this team,” Gundogan wrote in the Players Tribune.

“When I had to break the news to the boys that I was leaving in our group chat, I was very emotional. I will miss all of them, honestly. But I am happy to say that I’m leaving here as a champion, and I have nothing but love for the club in my heart.

“It’s amazing what we achieved. Five Premier League titles in my seven years here. Two FA Cups. The Champions League. The treble. But those are just trophies. The thing that I will remember the most is the feeling inside the squad, especially this season.”

Xavi plans to deploy new signing Gundogan up ahead behind Lewandowski

The purchase of Ilkay Gundogan is a major victory for FC Barcelona

The former Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City midfielder has been playing at the peak of his game lately, so the team’s acquisition of him on a free transfer is nothing short of a significant victory.

As a result, Xavi’s initial wish—to have an experienced midfielder manage his team the following year—was granted. Gundogan’s acquisition has almost unlocked a tricky combination for Barcelona. Now that Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, and Gavi are all undroppable, there are concerns about how Xavi will deploy Gundogan.

But because of the German’s effectiveness, SPORT journalist Jordi Carne claims that the management is picturing him in the most advanced role. He will collaborate closely with Robert Lewandowski, with whom the midfielder previously shared Borussia Dortmund. The journalist also claims that Franck Kessie and Sergi Roberto (if he stays) will serve as backups to Pedri, Gavi, and de Jong in the midfield.

And if that is the case, Pablo Torre and Nico Gonzalez will essentially need to leave on loan in order to hunt for possibilities. It should be mentioned that Gudogan has a contract with Barcelona through 2025, with a one-year extension option. The midfielder’s contract with the Blaugrana includes a €400 million release clause.

Since winning the historic triple with Man City last season, it’s fair to say that the midfielder had his heart set on joining Barcelona and no other team. After completing one aspect of their summer transfer strategy, Barcelona will now focus on selling players to raise further funds and bringing in a pivot midfielder.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hails Barcelona for showing faith in Xavi

Arteta was also asked if he would consider managing in La Liga himself.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hailed Barcelona for appointing Xavi as their head coach back in November 2021.

Barca parted ways with then-manager Ronald Koeman and the club was struggling in the middle of the table. A top-four finish looked unlikely and they were on the verge of elimination from their Champions League group.

Xavi returned to Camp Nou from Al Sadd and managed to guide La Blaugrana to a second-place finish in La Liga. They went one better in 2022/23, winning their first league title since 2019.

In a wide-ranging interview with MARCA, Arteta said that bringing in a figure like the former midfielder was important for Barcelona to reach the top again, hailing his side as ‘very reliable’.

“Only knowing his character and what he feels about the game, it’s clear that Barça needed a figure like him,” Arteta said.

“He has been able to withstand the pressure and has been faithful to his ideas by always defending the club and the players. The team has been very reliable all year.”

When asked if he would consider managing in La Liga himself, Arteta replied: “Spain is my country. I have been away for many years and at some point it could be an option to return to La Liga and have other experiences. But now…”

Arteta also spoke glowingly of former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, who he worked under as an assistant at Manchester City and is now a rival of in the Premier League.

“He is the best at everything. Management; convincing the group of your idea; getting the best out of them; decision-making before and during the match. Pep is a genius,” Arteta continued.
