Barcelona captain Raphinha has publicly endorsed his teammate Lamine Yamal to win the Ballon d’Or, arguing that the teenage sensation possesses the complete package required to claim football’s most prestigious individual prize.
Raphinha Backs Lamine Yamal to Win Ballon d’Or: “He Has to Win It”
In an interview with The Guardian, Raphinha did not hesitate when asked if Yamal was the ideal candidate. “Without a doubt, yes,” the Brazilian declared.
He emphasized that the award hinges on a combination of factors: “Individual statistics, team honours, and the magic you bring to the pitch… Lamine has it all.”
Raphinha stressed that Yamal’s brilliance extends beyond a single season. He praised the youngster’s consistency and exceptional start to the current campaign, noting that his statistics have been spectacular for multiple years.
The Barcelona captain also highlighted Yamal’s trophy haul as a decisive factor. He pointed to the winger’s success in winning two of three domestic titles with Barca and the World Cup with Spain.
Raphinha argued that Yamal’s role as a decisive player for both his club and country strengthens his case.
Addressing potential accusations of bias, Raphinha insisted his support goes beyond their shared locker room.
He maintained that Yamal’s on-pitch performances and silverware would make him the favourite regardless of their relationship.
“Even if I wasn’t Lamine’s teammate… for me, he’s the favourite; he has to win it,” Raphinha concluded.
The captain’s endorsement adds significant weight to the young forward’s campaign as the voting deadline approaches, setting the stage for a fierce contest against global stars like Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane.
