Best Barcelona goalkeepers of all time – who is the best Barcelona goalkeeper of all time?
Every team needs a good goalkeeper right? And every great team needs an even greater goalkeeper. Juventus-Buffon, Real Madrid-Casillas, Manchester United-Edwin Van Der Sar, are all goalkeepers synonymous with their teams.
5. Antoni Ramallets is one of the best Barcelona goalkeepers of all time
Rammalets spent most of his career at Barcelona during the 1950s and early 1960s, winning the Zamora Trophy as the best goalkeeper in La Liga on five occasions, and 18 major club honours. Born in Barcelona, Catalonia, he went on to win six leagues and five domestic cups; in 1951–52, as Barça won five major trophies, he contributed with 28 league games, being awarded his first Ricardo Zamora Trophy.
During the 1950s, Ramallets was a prominent member of the successful Barcelona team that also included Joan Segarra, Marià Gonzalvo, László Kubala, Sándor Kocsis, Evaristo, Luis Suárez and Zoltán Czibor. During his spell with the club he made 538 appearances, including 288 in the domestic league; on 6 March 1962 the Blaugrana played a testimonial in his honour against Hamburger SV, winning 5–1.
4. Salvador Sadurni is also of the best Barcelona goalkeepers of all time
The three-time winner of the Ricardo Zamora Trophy was considered to be the natural successor to Ramallets. Just like his predecessor, Sadurni would become the captain of Barcelona, albeit not as successful.
After one season on loan to neighbours CE Mataró he returned to alma mater Barcelona, where he remained for the rest of his 16-year career. He appeared in nine games in his first season in La Liga, and engaged in a battle for first-choice status with José Manuel Pesudo in the following years, subsequently becoming the undisputed starter.
According to the official Barcelona homepage, Sadurni was also the hero of “the bottle final” in 1969, when the Blaugrana won a Spanish Cup in the extremely hostile environment of the Santiago Bernabeu.
3. Andoni Zubizarreta is considered the third best Barcelona goalkeeper of all time
The current director of football of French club Olympique de Marseille was a formidable goalkeeper in his prime. “Zubizarreta was one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history not only of FC Barcelona, but of Spanish football in general”, stays on the Barcelona website to this day.
In 1986, Zubizarreta signed with Barcelona for a record for a player in the position €1.7 million, quickly removing established Urruti from the starting lineup and rarely missing a match afterwards – for example, only four in the Catalans’ four consecutive league wins combined. He added their first ever European Cup in 1992, following a 1–0 win over U.C. Sampdoria.
He amassed a massive 126 international caps and is the record holder with the most games played in the Spanish top flight. Zubizaretta is perhaps the first (and only) goalkeeper to captain a club side to Champions League glory. He bettered Ramallets record when he lifted the cup with the big ears in Wembley after the 1992 final.
2. Marc-Andre ter Stegen is considered the second best Barcelona goalkeeper of all time
In May 2014, Ter Stegen was announced as the new goalkeeper of Spanish club Barcelona, after the departures of Víctor Valdés and José Manuel Pinto, effective during the summer transfer window.
Shortly after, he signed a five-year contract that would keep him at the club until June 2019. The transfer fee was €12 million, and the buy-out clause was set to €80 million. After the move, Ter Stegen said joining the club was the right move and that he aimed to settle at the club.
He won the treble in his first season in Spain, playing for Barcelona in Copa del Rey and Champions League. If he continues like this, we might witness him reaching the first place soon. Watch & Bet Football Live =>
1. Victor Valdes is considered the best Barcelona goalkeeper of all time
Valdes, who is on the top of the list Best Barcelona Goalkeepers ever, spent most of his professional career with Barcelona in La Liga, and is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the club’s history, having appeared in 535 official games for the club and won 21 major titles, notably six La Liga titles and three Champions League championships.
The Spaniard made his first team debut against Legia Warszawa in the third qualifying round of the Champions League on 14 August 2002.The early part of the 2002–03 season saw Valdes play deputy to Argentine international Roberto Bonano, but the arrival of Radomir Antić as the new manager in January 2003 saw regular first-team opportunities for Valdes.
In the 2003–04 season, he emerged as first-choice goalkeeper, and in the 2004–05 season, he played in almost all of Barcelona’s matches, helping Barcelona to their first league title in six years. He also won the Zamora Trophy a record five times. He currently holds the club records as goalkeeper with most appearances in the league and in official competition, breaking Andoni Zubizarreta’s records during the 2011–12 season.
