Manchester City’s Eric Garcia will only head over to Barcelona next summer, confirmed Joan Laporta.
The Barca presidential candidate cleared up rumours of Garcia potentially joining this very month.
The Manchester City centre-back’s contract is due to run out in the summer. He has turned down every contract offer that was placed in front of him over the past year. His heart is set on returning to very club he grew up in.
Garcia was a part of the La Masia academy until he was 16. That was when he moved to England to test himself in foreign waters and even establish himself. He enjoyed a breakout 2019/20 season when City were without senior players in his position.
“We cannot give the seal of approval to the interim management committee to make decisions,” Laporta said after the meeting in the club’s offices on Friday. “We have concluded that if he [Eric García] is a player that is due to finish his contract, we have to wait. Now we would have to pay the transfer on top of the player’s salary.”
With Gerard Pique injured for several months, Garcia’s arrival could have really helped proceedings for Ronald Koeman. But instead of bidding heavy right now, Barca are content with waiting for the player until next summer.
