Barcelona are preparing for a summer overhaul at centre-back, and all signs point to Andreas Christensen being the man to leave Camp Nou.
Fabrizio Romano Confirms: Christensen on Barcelona’s Summer Departure List
The club, under pressure to rebalance the squad and clear space under La Liga’s strict salary cap, has reportedly deemed the Danish defender expendable.
When Andreas Christensen arrived on a free transfer from Chelsea in the summer of 2022, he slotted straight into Barcelona’s defence. He helped maintain a rock-solid backline, playing a key role in the league-shutout record in 2022–23.
However, injuries quickly derailed his momentum. He was sidelined for over seven months due to tendinopathy and further calf setbacks, limiting him to just 26 minutes on the pitch this season.
Despite Flick’s respect for his professionalism—and the memory of him operating as a defensive midfielder—Barcelona’s sporting director Deco and the club hierarchy conclude that Christensen no longer fits their streamlined plans.
A packed centre-back roster, including Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, Ronald Araujo, Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, and rising talent Sergi Dominguez, has made Christensen surplus to requirements.
Barcelona are under pressure from La Liga president Javier Tebas to make major financial adjustments before the new window opens.
The expectation is clear: offload at least one defender to balance the books and register incoming signings like Nico Williams and Joan Garcia.
Christensen ticks many boxes: he’s on high wages, has only one year left on his contract, and can generate a decent transfer fee—potentially between €15–30 million depending on interest and fitness levels.
Christensen, whose €500 million release clause is no barrier, could decide to stay until 2026 if no suitable offer arrives. But that scenario seems increasingly unlikely given Barca’s financial needs and crowded roster.
