De Ligt was on verge of sealing a move to the Blaugrana this summer.

But instead, he joined Juventus.

Dutch footballer Frenkie de Jong suggested this week that Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt, with whom he payed together at Ajax, could eventually come to Barcelona. De Ligt signed for the Italian team last summer and set aside the speculations that placed him in the Catalan club, but his errors in defense have led him to be questioned in Italy.

“De Ligt made the decision to go to Juventus and, in general, he is doing well in Turin,” said the midfielder in an interview with the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. “He can play for Barcelona in the near future. Going to Italy does not alter the fact that he could play for Barcelona in a few years’ time.

The youngduo attracted the attention of top clubs around Europe with their stellar performances on the field last year and it would be only a matter of time before the big teams came calling. Barcelona were the first to make a move, as the Catalans announced the signing of de Jong in January of this year in a deal that came into effect from July. De Ligt’s future, on the other hand, was a subject of tremendous speculation over the summer. However, the talented defender ultimately settled on a move to Turin to join Juventus.

Since leaving Ajax, the two players have enjoyed contrasting fortunes with their new clubs. While de Jong has continued to impress with the Blaugrana, de Ligt has struggled with the Old Lady, as his defensive errors have made headlines.
