Frenkie De Jong's Role As A Centre-Back Explained

Ronald Koeman explained why Frenkie de Jong was made to play at centre-back against Dynamo Kiev.

The Blaugrana did manage a narrow 2-1 victory in the Champions League tie at Camp Nou.

Koeman said after the game, “(Clement) Lenglet had many games and these last weeks suffered physical discomfort. We waited for a game that would be played a lot in the opposition half for De Jong to play, which is an option that is going forward, he offers us 2 against 1.

“In the end it was not so, but we have taken advantage of it from the beginning.”

It wasn’t the most clean showing from the Spanish giants, seeing how they put aside Juventus convincingly in the previous tie. Barca were much more dangerous in the first half and squandered several chances to extend their lead.

Koeman added, “We knew they had a good team. They are strong and in the second half they had good chances. They have smelled the blood and have gained confidence to seek the goal. And they have achieved it with 2-1.”

They are currently top of group G with three wins in three games. Their domestic form is still faltering with just eigth points collected in six games so far.
