Gary Neville claims the De Jong situation is just getting messy.

The Dutch midfielder has been struggling with Barcelona at the moment with the club apparently owing him £17 million in deferred payments.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with the Dutchman but it looks like Chelsea are favourites to sign De Jong who is interested in playing Champions League football.

According to new reports, Barcelona has deemed De Jong’s contract as somewhat illegal and has asked him to lower his wage demands.

Man United legend Gary Neville believes it would be the worst outcome if De Jong decides to move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

He said: “If they don’t get him, it’s embarrassing… Because of the relationship the player has with the manager.

“If he doesn’t want to come, they’d have switched off it a few weeks ago. They’re must be communication between the player and the manager, with De Jong saying ‘Wait for me, I’m coming’.

“If they don’t get him at the end, it’s embarrassing, if he stays at Barca. If he goes to Chelsea, it’s horrific.”
