Former midfielder Emmanuel Petit has issued a stark warning that FC Barcelona lack the defensive strength to win the UEFA Champions League this season.
Petit Slams Barcelona Backline: “You Can’t Win Europe With This Defence”

According to Petit, the club’s back-line is simply not good enough to compete at Europe’s highest level.
“Can you win the Champions League with defenders like this? No way! It’s impossible,” Petit said in his interview with Snabbare.
He pointed to Barcelona’s shocking defensive record in the semifinal stage last season — conceding seven goals across the two legs against Inter Milan — as proof that their defence cannot hold up under Champions League pressure.
Petit argued that Barcelona are now overly dependent on young star Lamine Yamal for offensive prowess but lack “world-class” quality across the squad, especially at the back.
He stressed that no matter how brilliant Yamal is, he cannot carry the burden alone. “Lamine can’t win the Champions League alone,” Petit said.
Critics of the current setup also highlight the tactics of coach Hansi Flick. His insistence on a high defensive line has repeatedly exposed Barcelona’s defence when opponents launch quick transitions or counter-attacks.
Barcelona may still have enough firepower to compete domestically, but according to Petit, the glaring defensive weaknesses make it unrealistic to believe they can lift Europe’s premier trophy this season.
Unless significant reinforcements or a tactical overhaul occurs, their Champions League hopes look dubious at best.
