Leeds United eyes to sign Barcelona's one of the brightest youngsters for free this summer

Ilias Akhomach has emerged as one of La Masia’s brightest players in recent times and has long been heralded as the upcoming star of the Blaugrana assault

At the youthful age of 17, he earned three appearances for the first team last season, which many saw as a stepping stone to future success. Ilias’s story hasn’t exactly been a bed of roses since then, either. Due to contractual issues, he has been less involved in the senior setup this term. Young Angel Alcaron has been favoured in his stead by Xavi Hernandez.

ESPN says that Leeds United is interested in the now 18-year-old winger as a potential signing for the upcoming season. With no extension negotiated with Barcelona by June, Ilias will become a free agent, making the Premier League team’s pursuit of him realistic.

According to reports, the Catalans are willing to keep the player but are unable to pay the compensation that his entourage is seeking. Although Leeds can meet the financial requirements, a significant portion of the rumoured trade will depend on their ability to avoid relegation.

With no manager in place and a 19th-place league standing, the English squad is in danger. But, staying in the first division is a serious possibility given that there are only two points separating them from the safe zone. The other major club, AC Milan, is interested in him, but they cannot guarantee him playing time with their senior team like the English club can.

This season, the adolescent has played 24 times for Barcelona Athletic, scoring two goals. In the league, he has only started 13 of his 20 games, and he hasn’t played an entire game in over a month. The kid is now serving a four-game suspension for his scathing remarks about the referee earlier this month. If Ilias signs a new contract with Barcelona or leaves as a free agent, only time will tell.
