Lionel Messi’s departure could allow some of the young players to shine, according to Real Madrid’s Luca Modric.
There is growing speculation behind Messi’s future after the Argentine handed in a transfer request. If he were to leave, Barcelona will have a massive vaccum to fill up.
There are quite a number of young stars coming in the Barca ranks like Ansu Fati and January signing, Francisco Trincao. If Messi were to leave, that would open up the door for some of these young attackers to thrive.
“It would be a huge loss. Like when Cristiano left. But you can’t think about the past. It’s football and that’s it,” Modric told AFP. “If it happens it will be a huge loss for the prestige of the league. But we need to go forward. Other players will become stars.
“When Ronaldo left, the same thing happened, the life of Real Madrid went on without him and it will be the same for Barcelona and La Liga without Messi.”
That is one way to point out the silver lining to Messi’s exit but the negative implications are far too many. It would be catastrophic if he ends up actually leaving Camp Nou at this point in time. The club is already in dire hands and losing him would nothing short of a disaster from the club’s end.
