Barcelona has reinstated Marc-Andre Ter Stegen as club captain after resolving a recent dispute over his medical documentation. The club confirmed the decision in an official statement, ending a brief but tense standoff between the two parties.
Official: Marc-Andre Ter Stegen Reappointed as Barcelona Captain
Earlier this week, Barcelona opened disciplinary proceedings against Ter Stegen after he refused to sign a medical report related to his back surgery.
The club intended to submit the document to La Liga, which would classify him as a long-term injury absence allowing them to free up 80% of his salary to register new signing Joan Garcia.
When Ter Stegen initially declined, Barcelona stripped him of the captaincy. However, tensions eased on Friday when the German goalkeeper agreed to sign the necessary paperwork.
Barcelona promptly closed the disciplinary case and restored his captaincy, stating: “FC Barcelona report that Marc-Andre ter Stegen has signed the authorization for the club’s Medical Services to process the mandatory medical report in La Liga following his surgery.
The disciplinary file is closed, and the player recovers the captaincy of the first team with immediate effect.”
Ter Stegen had earlier hinted at a resolution, expressing his willingness to cooperate with the club.
His decision allows Barcelona to proceed with their financial plans, including registering Joan Garcia as his temporary replacement.
Additionally, Inigo Martinez’s expected departure to Al-Nassr will further help the club meet La Liga’s financial regulations ahead of their season opener against Mallorca.
With the matter now settled, Barcelona will focus on rebuilding harmony within the squad as they prepare for the new campaign. Ter Stegen’s return to the captaincy ensures stability, while the club moves forward with its squad adjustments.
