Messi confirms 70% pay cut while criticizing Barcelona board

There has been a lot of talk in recent weeks about the players in Barcelona refusing to accept a pay cut because of the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

They point to the situation of Real Madrid, which announced that there would be no staff cuts, but the Catalan team’s players eventually agreed to drop as much as 70 percent of their salaries during the crisis.

And not only that, players led by Lionel Messi have announced that they will help the club ensure that all non-sporting staff in Barcelona have full income.

“Before we go any further, we want to make it clear that we have always been prepared to cut wages because we understand perfectly well that we are in an exceptional situation. We as players are always there to help the club when asked.

“For our party, the moment has come that the reduction will be 70% of our salary during the alarm period. We will also help the club so that workers are paid 100% of their wages.”

He says he is surprised that there are people in the club trying to put players under scrutiny and “put us under pressure to do something we always knew we would do”.

“It does not surprise us that there were some within the club who tried to put us in the loop and tried to put pressure on us to do something we always knew we were going to do. If we haven’t talked so far, it’s because the priority was to find solutions to help the club and see who were the most affected in this situation.
