In order to register the players without a first-team number this week before the game against Levante, Barcelona is currently racing against the clock to clear up payroll space. But it will not be simple. Inaki Pena’s resignation may be resolved quickly and would somewhat improve the situation, but final discussions are still needed for Oriol Romeu’s departure.
SPORT claims that the lack of Barcelona’s sports director Deco has caused a delay in the negotiations to terminate Romeu’s contract and that a final meeting is needed to complete the transfer.
The midfield player, who has made things simpler for the team, is awaiting Barcelona’s final offer before accepting one of the alternatives on the table, so there isn’t an agreement as of yet.
Romeu’s contract is still in effect for another year. Although his pay is not the highest in the team, it is substantial enough to deter other teams from signing him. The player will require payment from Barcelona, and the amount is already being discussed.
Barcelona ready to terminate out-of-favour star’s contract this week
The former Southampton player has returned to base in Barcelona with one year left on his contract after spending a season on loan at Girona in 2024–2025. Romeu’s issue is that, despite being a key member of the preseason training squad, he is not included in the Blaugrana’s plans in any manner.
According to reports, teams like Girona and Valencia are interested in signing the 33-year-old for the upcoming campaign, but only if Romeu becomes a free agent. And as previously mentioned, if the most recent information from the media on Monday is any indication, such a development may occur as early as this week.
“This week, the Blaugrana sporting management hopes to finalize the termination of Oriol Romeu’s contract, in which he will have to contribute some economic amount so that he can leave with the letter of freedom,” reports Sport.
