Barcelona players sold with buy back clause – Top 5

Barcelona players sold with buy back clause? Have you ever wondered who are the Barcelona players sold with buy-back clauses?

The buy-back clause is becoming increasingly more common as elite European clubs establish multi-million euro youth academies and want some insurance on their investments even after they leave. While traditionally a continental clause, English clubs such as Manchester United has been insisting on buy-back clauses in transfers of late.

The benefits of a buy-back clause are apparent for the selling club. They can allow a player on the fringes of the first team to leave and simply buy them back for a slightly higher price if they improve to a desired level over the proceeding seasons.

However, the benefits are not so obvious for the buying club. They may gain a very good player from an elite club, but if that player improves they could lose him for less than his market value. Regardless, Barcelona has been insisting on inserting such clauses in transfer agreements for the best part of a decade.

Let’s take a look at some of the players Barcelona have sold, but own the rights to call back. Here are the Top 5 Barcelona players sold with buy-back clause.

5. Marc Cucurella: Barcelona players sold with buy back clause

Cucurella participated in the pre-season tour of North America with Barça’s first team last summer and was hopeful of more senior action in the current campaign following the departure of Lucas Digne to Everton.

At the last minute, he was informed Ernesto Valverde would be counting on fellow Barca B player Juan Miranda as Jordi Alba’s deputy, however. Instead of moping, the Catalan instead seized an opportunity to move to the Basque Country on loan for a year, a reflection of his healthy desire for fresh challenges.

Cucurella went to Eibar in order to gain more playing experience at the top level. The product of the Barça youth system has done just that, playing 33 games, 31 in the league and 2 in the cup, and scoring one goal in each competition. In June, Barca triggered the buy-back clause in Cucurella’s contract and brought him back from Eibar for €4 million. He was supposed start training with the first-team but did not presumably because of an already agreed deal to join Getafe.

4. Denis Suarez – Barcelona players sold with buy back clause

Another player whose fledgling career has been nomadic thus far, Denis Suarez started out as a Manchester City youth player. He had a short spell at Celta Vigo B before returning to Manchester and eventually signing for Barcelona in 2013 for an undisclosed fee.

The midfielder was placed in the Barcelona B team between 2013 and 2015, although he spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Sevilla with Gerard Deulofeu. Upon his return from the loan spell, Suarez was sold to Villareal for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2015.

Once again, the transfer included a buy-back clause which was activated just a year later when Barcelona brought the 24-year-old back to the Nou Camp for just €3.25 million. During his first season back, Suarez managed just 12 starts in La Liga.

3. Yerry Mina – Barcelona players sold with buy back clause

Barcelona are known for not only including buyback clauses but also often activating them, having re-signed Luis Garcia, Gerard Deulofeu and Denis Suarez in recent seasons.

Mina made just six appearances for Barca after joining in an €11.8 million move from Palmeiras in January, but his performances for Colombia in the 2018 World Cup saw him attract plenty of interest. Everton won the race to sign the defender in a £27million move over the summer, but Barcelona retain a £54million buyback clause on the 24-year-old.

2. Gerard Deulofeu: Barcelona players sold with buy back clause

At only 24 years old, Gerard Deulofeu has literally been around the block and back. The winger came through the youth ranks at Barcelona, making 68 appearances for Barcelona B between 2011 and 2013.

However, he just couldn’t break into the Barca first team and in 2013 went on loan to Everton followed by another loan spell at Sevilla in 2014. Upon his return from the second loan spell, La Blaugrana decided to sell him to Everton for a fee close to €6 million. A buy-back clause was inserted into the agreement worth €12 million and following a season and a half at Goodison Park and a half-season loan at AC Milan, Deulofeu was back at the Nou Camp.

The Spaniard made only 10 appearances for Barcelona after his return and was once again loaned out to the Premier League for the second half of last season. This time it was Watford who acquired his services and the Hornets made the move permanent this summer with a €13 million transfer.

1. Luis Garcia: Barcelona players sold with buy back clause

A former favourite at Anfield, Luis Garcia was among the original players bought back by Barcelona. Having come through the youth setup, Garcia spent five years playing for the Barcelona B side before spending a further three years on loan at Valladolid, Toledo, Tenerife, and Valladolid again.

He eventually secured a permanent transfer away from the Nou Camp in 2002 when Atletico Madrid signed the attacking midfielder for €3.6 million. However, after just one season at Los Colchoneros, Barcelona activated a buy-back clause, paying only €1.4 million more than what they sold him for the summer previous. Garcia went on to make 25 appearances for Barca in the 2003/04 season before Liverpool came knocking with an offer worth around €8 million for the Spaniard.

Having previously worked with the Liverpool manager at the time, Rafa Benitez, at Tenerife Garcia was keen to move to Anfield. He would go on to spend three seasons with the Merseyside club before returning to Atletico Madrid in 2007.
