When it comes to outstanding defender Ronald Araujo, Barcelona is in a bit of a difficult situation. After the Uruguayan signed a club-friendly contract in 2022, they allegedly promised him significant income rises. Now, they are in a situation where they are unable or unwilling to give him the contract he was hoping for.
Barcelona needs to sell him right away or find a way to sign him to a new contract because he has two years left on his current one. He will still be under contract for another year come July, but his worth will drop dramatically. Araujo was sidelined until the conclusion of the transfer window, and Sporting Director Deco had planned to explore for a sale earlier in the year. However, both Manchester United and Bayern Munich had withdrawn their interest.
Ronald Araujo could leave Barcelona for free
It puts Barcelona in a bit of a hole, according to Sport. Araujo’s agent’s reported lack of “friendliness” with the club is said to work against both him and possibly them, but if Barcelona fails to match his wage expectations, Araujo is expected to run out his contract, leave the team for free in 2026, and there will likely be no sale. Araujo’s willingness to sign a contract would need to match his earning potential in the Premier League, according to the Catalan Daily.
If Araujo were to depart free for Barcelona, this would be a grave mishandling of their resources. Though the Blaugrana are in no position to let their most valuable players leave for free, there is still plenty of time to make things right.
