Barcelona are still hoping on keeping Lionel Messi beyond the 2020/21 campaign.
That is according to presidential candidate, Victor Font who has lots of plans in place he wants to implement if he gets elected.
When asked about his objectives for the club after Messi’s departure, Font replied, “Maintain the ownership model and keep winning titles. That is, to be competitive by having the club owned by the members when this winning generation no longer exists.”
Font thinks now is not the time to think of life without Messi. Despite the Argentine’s contract expiring in June, Font hopes to resign him. He said, “Not at all. In fact, our goal is for Leo to continue to be and continue to lead the team on the field as long as he wants to continue playing.”
The results of the presidential election will be revealed on January 24. Barca are not tipped to sign anybody during this time. Other than Messi’s there are several players who could see the boot in the following transfer windows due to poor performance.
Of course, keeping Messi would be huge for the club’s immediate future. The team drops in quality massively without him in the line up.
