Xavi explains how crucial Gavi is after his injury

Barcelona midfielder Gavi is out for the remainder of the season.

The 19-year-old midfielder will be out for the rest of the 2023/24 campaign after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament while on international duty with Spain.

He has also suffered an injury to his lateral meniscus and is expected to undergo surgery next week.

Barcelona were not happy with the Spanish Football Federation after playing Gavi in the international break despite having already qualified for the Euro 2024.

Gavi is now a major doubt for Euro 2024 and the Olympic Games with Spain next summer.

“It is a huge loss for us,” Xavi said ahead of Barça’s LaLiga game away at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

“You can’t replace him; the heart, passion and courage he plays with. We have to try and find solutions without him, but it’s difficult.

“Rayo is the type of game where we need Gavi’s mentality and quality. It will be intense. Vallecas is always a difficult place to go for us.”

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente claims Gavi’s injury was unfortunate and was not down to overplaying the teenager.

With his absence, Barcelona are now been linked with moves for Liverpool’s Thiago Alcantara and Giovani Lo Celso of Tottenham Hotspur.
