Arda Turan unlikely to return to Barcelona after Basaksehir exit

Once a great hope, now an outcast.

Arda is expected to stay in Turkey.

Turkish midfielder Arda Turan‘s contract with Istanbul club Medipol Basaksehir was terminated following a mutual agreement, the Süper Lig club announced Tuesday.

“Our footballer Arda Turan met with Basaksehir Chairman Göksel Gumusdag and requested to leave the club to open a new page in his career. Gumusdag positively responded to his request and therefore, Turan’s contract was annulled with a mutual agreement,” Basaksehir said in a statement. The midfielder had signed with the Istanbul side a two-and-a-half-year loan deal from Barcelona in January 2018.

Speaking to the press, Turan said he was grateful for having played in the club. “All the things I have experienced will hold a special place in my memories. I sincerely thank everyone at Basaksehir for all the things they have done for me. I will continue to do what I love doing, playing football,” he said.

Once described as the rising star of Turkish football, Turan made his professional debut at Galatasaray in 2005 and spent half of the season on loan in Manisaspor. He returned to Istanbul next season and spent five successful seasons with the Yellow-Reds before joining Atletico Madrid in August 2011 for 13 million euros.

His former side Galatasaray will try to sign him this winter market since Arda is not expected to rejoin, as such, the ranks of Barcelona. With him having six months left on his contract and is not expected that Barca will demand a high price for a possible move.
