FC Barcelona is one of the biggest clubs in the World along with Real Madrid. Last season Barcelona won the La Liga. However, they have not been able to win the Champions League since 2015.
Domestically, Barcelona has won a record 74 trophies; 26 La Liga, 30 Copa del Rey, 13 Supercopa de España, 3 Copa Eva Duarte, and 2 Copa de la Liga trophies, as well as being the record holder for the latter four competitions. In international club football, the club has won 20 European and worldwide titles; 5 UEFA Champions League titles, a record 4 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, a joint-record 5 UEFA Super Cup, a record 3 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and 3 FIFA Club World Cup.
Barcelona was ranked first in the International Federation of Football History & Statistics Club World Ranking for 1997, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2015 and currently occupies the second position on the UEFA club rankings. The club has a long-standing rivalry with Real Madrid; matches between the two teams are referred to as El Clásico.
Carles Puyol
A one-club man, he served as the long-time team captain for his only club Barcelona after taking over from Luis Enrique in August 2004, and went on to appear in 593 competitive matches for the club and win 20 major titles, notably six La Liga trophies and three Champions League titles.
Barcelona bid farewell to Puyol on 15 May 2014, after a fifteen-year career in the first team (ten as captain) that brought him 21 titles. He announced his retirement shortly after at the age of 36 but stayed connected to his only club; he was immediately appointed director of football Andoni Zubizarreta’s assistant. He resigned in January 2015, shortly after Zubizarreta was fired.
Andres Iniesta
Andres Iniesta was installed as captain of Barcelona in 2015 after a vote among the squad saw the Spaniard nominated to take over the armband from the departed Xavi. He was assisted by three vice-captains, with Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets being promoted from their previous third and fourth roles, respectively.
Unlike most other clubs, Barca’s captain is elected democratically. The players vote for who they wish to see lead them rather than the manager picking a skipper.
He is the best of our FC Barcelona Notable Captains list in our opinion.
Xavi
Xavi was installed as captain in such a way following the departure of Carles Puyol. Like Iniesta, Messi and Busquets, he is also a graduate of the Barcelona youth system and was a long-term servant to the club.
Xavi joined La Masia, the Barcelona youth academy, at age 11, and made his first-team debut against Mallorca in August 1998. In all, he played over 700 matches, a club record, and scored 85 goals. Xavi is the first player in the club’s history to play 150 European and FIFA Club World Cup matches combined. With Barcelona, Xavi won eight La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles.
He has won 31 trophies for Barcelona and Spain, a total only surpassed by Andrés Iniesta as the most decorated Spanish player in history. Xavi came third in the 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year, followed by third place for its successor award, the FIFA Ballon d’Or, in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, he was runner up to Lionel Messi for the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award.
Xavi left Barcelona and spent four years in Al Sadd before retiring in 2019. Currently, he is serving Barcelona in a managerial role.
So who are the recent most notable captains? Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, Carles Puyol, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Lionel Messi are some of the most notable Barcelona captains.
Current Barcelona captain? Sergio Busquets is the current Barcelona captain after Lionel Messi left. Gerard Pique is the vice-captain.
