The six-time Ballon d’Or winner attempted to leave Camp Nou in the summer of 2020 but decided to seek out his contract.

His contract expires this summer and Barcelona is convinced they can convince their star player to stay.

With Laporta returning as the newly elected Barcelona president, Messi might extend his stay at Camp Nou.

Joan Laporta is motivated and has vowed to try and keep Messi with the Catalan giants.

Messi has scored 23 goals in 28 matches in the Spanish top-flight and won the Copa del Rey, his first silverware of the season.

Laporta told Deportes Cuatro: “Everything is progressing adequately.

“I will do everything within the club’s capabilities to get him to stay. That’s what we’re doing. Messi is motivated.

“He is an extraordinary person and I am convinced that he will want to continue at Barca.”
