Ousmane Dembele’s future remains uncertain

In January, Ousmane Dembele caused quite a commotion. The attacker enraged the Barcelona management by requesting a large new contract at Camp Nou, forcing the club to sanction his departure during the winter transfer window.

However, the Frenchman chose to stay at the club in January rather than go on a free transfer in the summer, further infuriating Barcelona supporters.

Dembele has appeared in three league matches since the end of the winter transfer window, scoring one goal and assisting on three others. His cameo against Athletic Club was particularly excellent, and it is quite probable that the 24-year-old will play a key role in assisting Barcelona in reaching their goals by the end of the season.

Chelsea’s decision to abandon their pursuit of Dembele comes just days after Roman Abramovich placed the club up for sale amid the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Chelsea may face some uncertainty as a result of the transaction. While Chelsea should have little trouble finding a new buyer, the management might signal a policy shift, which could have serious ramifications for the club’s summer recruitment plans.

With that in mind, Chelsea cannot afford to commit a large portion of their pay budget in Ousmane Dembele at the present. The Frenchman has struggled with injuries in the past and has yet to prove himself in La Liga.
