A recent SPORT article provided an update on Barcelona’s transfer market strategies for this summer
Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez have joined the team, while other outstanding players like Arda Guler have been passed over in a similar fashion. The young Turk recently decided against moving to Camp Nou and instead chose to join Real Madrid.
Barcelona hasn’t given up on the market, according to SPORT. In order to raise the calibre of the club as a whole, they are anticipated to make moves for a new right-back and a defensive midfielder. Gerard Gumbau is one of the players Barcelona is keeping an eye on. As Barça searches for a temporary replacement for the departing Sergio Busquets, the former La Masia midfielder is being eyed as a viable possibility.
Oriol Romeu has recently been linked with a move to the Catalans, but the Girona star is anticipated to demand a transfer price of €8 million. Barcelona has the money to make the transfer, but they do not want to shell out €8 million for a player who will turn 32 later this year. Gumbau, in contrast, is free to go this summer after his contract at Elche expired on June 30. The Spaniard is coming off a successful season with Elche, which included notably tallying six assists in 35 league games.
Gumbau is at the prime of his career at the age of 28. He has nine senior appearances for the Blaugrana and has previously played for Barcelona’s junior squad, so he is familiar with the club’s style of play, which is good news for Xavi Hernandez.
Gumbau is the Catalans’ most cost-effective option this summer because of this and the potential for a free transfer. Gumbau’s lack of experience at the highest level of football, though, makes him a hazardous target for Barcelona, particularly if the team hopes to find a top-notch Busquets replacement.
