Barcelona captain Lionel Messi hold off negotiations over renewing his contract with the club and is ready to leave Camp Nou in 2021.

The Argentine has halted contract talks with the club due to resentment with the media who made him responsible for the recent events transpiring in the club.

His current contract expires at 2021 but was expected to sign a new contract which will hold him off at Camp Nou until 2023, according to Spanish radio network Cadena Ser.

Earlier this season, Messi was blamed by his former teammate and Director of Football at FC Barcelona, Eric Abidal, for the departure of manager Ernesto Valverde.

Messi denied that he had nothing to do with this decision starting a war of words with his former teammate Eric Abidal.

In April, Messi criticised the board for implying players were not willing to take a pay cut to help the club’s finances due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The superstar recently passed the milestone of 700 career goals against Atletico Madrid which ended in a draw.

Things haven’t got better on the pitch under new manager Quique Setien and it looks increasingly likely that the Catalan giants will miss out on the La Liga title to rivals Real Madrid.
