Memphis Depay and Xavi Hernandez meet to talk about the future of the Dutch in Barcelona

Even though Memphis Depay hasn’t been at Barcelona for 18 months, it hasn’t been a smooth ride for the Dutch forward.

He was regarded as their premier forward before his injury last season, but since since Xavi Hernandez arrived, he has fallen out of favour. Last summer, it appeared as though he would go, but because no suitable offer came through, he decided to remain at Camp Nou.

He will reevaluate his future in January because it appears he is lower on the totem pole. He will meet with Xavi to talk about his future, but in contrast to the summer, he will try to keep Memphis.

Xavi wants to keep Memphis because of the depth he gives, and he knows Barcelona won’t be able to add many new players this winter. Additionally, they are no longer prepared to let Memphis depart on a free agent, as doing so would not increase their salary cap enough to sign another player.

Memphis’ contract will expire then, and he will be free to talk to teams starting in January. It might be advantageous for both parties to maintain their connection through the summer if the Dutch forward is content to continue as a rotational option. Memphis would have been without regular football for a full 18 months at that point.
