There has been a lot of “will they, won’t they” over the past few weeks regarding Barcelona’s intentions to sign a new right-back in the summer

According to some media reports, the Catalans won’t make filling the position a priority until the next season and will instead stick with Jules Kounde and Sergi Roberto if no one else is signed. However, according to other reports, following Kounde’s underwhelming performance against Rayo Vallecano, Barça is prioritising the acquisition of a right-back specialist this summer.

The latter position has since been supported by Ferran Correas of the SPORT, who claims that Barcelona did, in fact, “activate” the acquisition of a new right-back in the summer and will treat the matter as a priority.

The Blaugrana have struggled at right-back ever since Dani Alves left in 2016, and they haven’t been able to locate a suitable replacement. The performance against Rayo demonstrated that Kounde is not totally at ease in the position, despite the fact that he has generally done well this season. In fact, rumours claim that Kounde has already told Xavi that he wants to play centre back again next season. As a result, finding a new right-back is once again high on the priority list at Camp Nou.

Joao Cancelo, a star player for Manchester City who is currently on loan at Bayern Munich, is one of the names that is most well-liked at the Barcelona offices. While Pep Guardiola does not want him back at the Etihad for the upcoming season, the Bavarians will not sign him permanently in the summer. He will therefore need to find a new place to live in the summer, yet moving to Barcelona would be financially difficult.

The same is true for Villarreal’s Juan Foyth, who manager Xavi prefers to target. The La Liga leaders, who are now in first place, find it nearly hard to consider signing him due to his €54 million release clause. Thomas Meunier, a seasoned Borussia Dortmund player, is the third candidate being considered. According to reports, the Belgian is eager to transfer and has even told his club that he plans to depart in the summer. Although it is still unclear who Barcelona will ultimately sign, there will be active efforts made this spring and summer to strengthen the right-back position.
