Following the recent announcement of a new contract for Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona intends to extend midfielder Frenkie de Jong’s agreement

The La Liga powerhouses are attempting to sign De Jong to a shorter contract, as they did with the custodian.

As the Dutch midfielder has developed into one of the team’s untouchable players, rumours of his departure have diminished. De Jong, who moved from Ajax for a large transfer price of €75 million in 2019, frequently came under fire for his inconsistent play.

De Jong’s transfer story dominated the news as Barca attempted to cash in on him despite interest from Manchester United, only for the midfielder to make it clear that he would stay with the Catalan powerhouses. With a succession of spectacular performances, the 26-year-old silenced his detractors and helped Barça win La Liga last season.

De Jong’s significance has increased as a result of Sergio Busquets leaving his longtime club this summer. Manager Xavi has frequently praised De Jong as one of the best midfielders in the world. De Jong has benefited from partnering with Oriol Romeu since the former Girona star can provide protection in the back while the Netherlands international has the freedom to wander further up the pitch.

De Jong’s crew believes there is no need to talk a new contract because the Dutchman’s current one runs until 2026, despite Barca’s intentions. De Jong has had a strong start to the new campaign, putting in standout efforts in each of Barcelona’s three triumphs, including scoring a goal against Villarreal.
