Xavi claims his side lacked ruthlessness in front of goal.

Summer signing Robert Lewandowski struggled to find the back of the net against his former side Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

Pedri also hit the woodwork when Barcelona was already 2-0 down.

“We were better than Bayern in many aspects,” Xavi said. “We were better physically and we dominated the first half. I’m angry because it was a day to win. It’s a learning experience, but it’s hard. We didn’t score despite having seven clear chances. You have to score them. I’m pissed off but proud.

“It’s also about effectiveness. You get in front of the goalkeeper and you have to score. The first half was excellent, we had them in their half, we dominated them and we won duels. We deserved to win.

“To learn from our mistakes. When the situation is bad, you learn. You can’t go 1-0 down from a corner like that. They shouldn’t be able to go inside on a counter-attack. We have to learn. We’re leaving with a 2-0 scoreline, which is not what we saw on the pitch.”

Can Barcelona make any more signings before the end of the window?

0
Can Barcelona make any more signings before the end of the window
Bildbyran

These are times of transition at Barcelona. Financial complications recently brought the Catalan club to its knees, ultimately leading to Lionel Messi’s shock exit to PSG. With the club reportedly asking high-profile players like Gerard Piqué to take pay cuts, things didn’t look good.

Joan Laporta came in to steady the ship in January 2021, using bold and ingenious methods to generate transfer funds for Barca’s depleted squad. The man responsible for the club’s imperial phase between 2003 and 2010 has signed several players so far, but will any more follow?

It’s the question on everyone’s lips, not least sports bettors with their eyes on La Liga. Real Madrid have overtaken Barcelona in the league’s power rankings, looking a far better bet over the last few seasons.

Betting on Barcelona without Messi or Suárez is also riskier, especially where goals are concerned. Bet365 free bet promotions are great ways to start betting on the legendary Catalan side without the associated risk. With several new signings, the future looks bright, but you never know.

Xavi might even get a few new additions to his squad before the transfer window is out. Barca are interested in Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, but whether they can afford him is another question.

Keep reading for a look at Barcelona’s financial position and whether the club will make any more signings this summer.

Why are Barca in a financial mess?

Barcelona are suffering the consequences of several questionable transfers and years of financial mismanagement. Many people wonder how a club can be in financial disarray after receiving £198m for Neymar, but president Josep Maria Bartomeu managed to bungle it.

Spending almost £400m on Antoine Griezmann, Phillippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembélé over the last few years is one factor. None of these players can convincingly argue they’ve made much of an impact, yet their financial cost was immense.

Transfer fees are one thing, but Barca have also been extravagant with player contracts since the days of MSM. Having three of the best attackers in history on the books was bound to destabilise the club’s financial foundations after a while.

How Joan Laporta steadied the ship

Barcelona relied on cut-price transfers like Martin Braithwaite before Joan Laporta returned to the helm. The club president took the radical step of selling future licensing rights, generating over £509m with a few big deals.

It explains how Barcelona afforded Raphinha, Franck Kessié, Robert Lewandowski, Jules Koundé and Andreas Christensen this summer. Many spectators looked on in disbelief at the transfers, with the Catalans previously declaring a massive £1bn debt under Bartomeu.

Whether or not Laporta’s extreme tactics will pay off in the long term remains to be seen. On the one hand, he has generated enough funds to keep Barcelona competing, but it has come at a huge potential cost.

Selling over 30% of TV licensing revenue over the next three decades is risky, as is selling 49.9% of the Barca Licensing and Merchandising Company. Only time will tell whether Laporta has made the right decision.

Complications along the way

It hasn’t all been rosy since Laporta returned as club president. He made some exciting signings for Xavi’s squad, but Barca were initially blocked from registering any new players. This led to club legend Gerard Piqué taking a salary reduction and the sale of 49% of Barca Studios.

All players have been registered now, but it hasn’t been easy. Barcelona fans worldwide will desperately be hoping Lewandowski and company will make it worthwhile. The club looks financially stable for now, but with Financial Fair Play reviews and other future obstacles, they’re not in the clear yet.

Barcelona transfers so far

Barcelona have acted quickly and shrewdly in the transfer market, making several vital signings. Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich is the big one, with the Polish striker moving on after a decade in Munich. You can find a full list of Barca’s summer transfers below:

  • Andreas Christensen (from Chelsea on a free).
  • Franck Kessié (from AC Milan on a free).
  • Raphinha (from Leeds for £52.5m).
  • Robert Lewandowski (from Bayern Munich for £38m)
  • Jules Koundé (from Sevilla for £50m)

Will there be any more signings before the window closes?

Most football experts had no idea the Catalans would be able to afford the players they have signed so far, and even more could be on the way. Pep Guardiola has revealed Bernardo Silva likes Barcelona a lot, and the transfer could easily happen before the transfer window closes.

Laporta is evidently sticking with his tactic of selling off licensing revenue percentages or stakes in one of the club’s many sister companies. He will have funds to spend as a result, with players like Ángel Di María and İlkay Gündoğanon on the potential shopping list.

Who knows? One day we may even see Barca’s guiding star Lionel Messi return to Camp Nou. It looks unlikely for this transfer window, but never say never.

Barcelona succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich last night.

The Blaugrana lost their second Champions League group-stage game at the Allianz Arena last night.

Rightfully so, coach Xavi was furious with his team’s performance on the German soil.

He told Diario AS:“We were better than Bayern in many aspects. We were better physically and we dominated the first half. We cannot let [teams] off, I am annoyed because it was a day to win.”

“The sensation is that it was very good, it was for winning, it is a lesson but it is hard, we did not score in spite of having seven very clear chances. You have to put them in.”

“I am pissed off but proud. We were equal to them, we can say that we were better but this is about winning. The first from the corner and the second from not stopping counter-attacks. You have to do it. They are a complete team, but we are at the start. We have to improve these aspects in the areas.”

Xavi insists Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena is no “house of horrors” for Barcelona.

Bayern Munich will face Barcelona in the upcoming Champions League encounter. They have an edge over the Spanish side with the H2H record of 17-4. They thrashed Barca in the last meeting 8-2 in 2020.

Despite the struggles, Xavi is optimistic his side can end the negative run.

“I think there are a lot of expectations on us,” said Xavi. “The match doesn’t change anything, we can’t draw conclusions.

“Nine months have passed and everything looks different. We have improved in many aspects. We see ourselves as capable of competing. We are excited, we can win this match and change history.

“We are playing against one of the best clubs in the world and they have a great coach. We want to show what level we are at.”

Barcelona have never won away to Bayern, but Xavi is looking forward to the challenge of ending that streak.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a house of horror, it’s Bayern Munich,” he said. “I’ve seen both sides of the coin, goals for and against.

“Things are cyclical. We haven’t won on this pitch and this speaks to our difficulties. We’re looking forward to it.”

Along with players, Xavi believes his side have also changed in terms of mentality.

“A lot has changed, especially the mentality,” he said. “I told them that this was Barcelona and we had to run, have personality.

“The mentality has changed, we have gained in personality and mentality. The signings have helped us and the victories have given us confidence”.

Julian Nagelsmann will reunite with Lewandowski at the Allianz Arena.

The Poland forward left Bayern Munich this summer ending his nine-year spell with the Bavarians.

He scored 344 times in 374 games for Bayern and signed for the Catalan giants this summer.

The veteran forward has already scored nine goals in six games for his new club.

“I am looking forward to it, not so much as an opponent because he’s very dangerous, but as a person I will be pleased to see him,” said Nagelsmann.

“I hope the fans will honour that too, regardless of how things were with his departure.”

“He is their most dangerous threat in front of goal,” added Nagelsmann. “If he maintains the physical fitness he can play for sure a few more seasons at this level.

“In the last few years he has been scoring about 40 goals a year. He is on a good road towards achieving that this season.

“We have to stop passes and crosses to him. But there are several other very good players in that team as well.”

Bernardo Silva is reportedly keen on a move to Spain.

Barcelona are still optimistic that they will sign Manchester City playmaker Bernardo Silva. The Spanish giants will continue their efforts in the next transfer window.

The Catalan giants failed in their pursuit of Silva this past summer.

According to The Mirror, Barca have not given hope of luring the 28-year-old to Camp Nou. The Portugal international has three years left on his contract with City.

However, Silva is reportedly keen on a move to Spain and could leave in January or the following summer transfer window.

Bernardo Silva has won back-to-back Premier League titles for Manchester City and did well for his national side where he plays along with Ronaldo.

Barcelona won 4-0 over Cadiz last night continuing their winning streak.

The Blaugrana secured a top position in the La Liga standings with the 4-0 Cadiz win on Saturday night.

The game was halted due to a medical emergency in the stands and luckily nothing unfortunate has happened.

“It was not a nice situation for anyone. Health and people’s lives always come before anything else,” Xavi said.

“Luckily they were able to revive the person and they are healthy and safe. We felt, both teams, that it was right to restart the game. We hope the supporter recovers quickly. If it had gone another way, we would have suspended the match.

“There was a moment when they told us there was nothing they could do, we were hearing a lot of things. In the end, it’s a humanity issue. We are talking about human life and it has to come before football. Among everyone, we tried to help and we hope they are OK.”
