FC Barcelona has prioritised the acquisition of a new right-back
The position needs reinforcements because Jules Kounde is hesitant to play there and Julian Araujo and Sergino Dest are both probably on their way out. Ivan Fresneda of Real Valladolid is one option that sporting director Deco is rumoured to be considering. His signing has not yet been ruled out. However, SPORT is reporting that Barcelona is still considering hiring Manchester City exile Joao Cancelo, whose services are still being offered to the team.
Under Pep Guardiola, the 29-year-old has lost favour at the Etihad and spent the second part of the previous season on loan at Bayern Munich. The Portuguese star is poised to leave Cityzens since he has no future there, and Barça has expressed interest in signing him.
Jorge Mendes, a super agent, has thus offered them Cancelo. The La Liga champions, however, are unable to finance a permanent transfer, therefore a loan move would be the only option. However, even such an operation can turn out to be expensive.
According to sources, the Blaugrana may need to pay close to €20 million (including the loan fee and salary) to sign Cancelo for just one year. Even a season-long loan contract would be expensive, and registering him would be challenging. As a result, signing the Portuguese international may not be the best course of action.
According to the article, Deco is also seeking for someone who can help the club both now and in the future. Cancelo would not be consistent with such viewpoint. As a result, a move for the right-back doesn’t seem likely.
